CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Thursday marked the beginning of an exciting weekend for MIT Lightweight Women's Crew. The team took on Buffalo and Simmons in racing on Saturday and Stanford on Sunday and participated in events coinciding with MIT's annual Campus Preview Weekend for students admitted to the class of 2013.
To kick-off the weekend, on Thursday afternoon, MIT Crew welcomed home MIT alumna Heide Stefanyshyn-Piper (http://www.jsc.nasa.gov/Bios/htmlbios/stefanys.html). Heide came to Pierce Boathouse to return the MIT Crew flag that accompanied her on her most recent NASA mission. She then spoke to the student-athletes about her work as an astronaut with NASA and her time rowing at MIT.
On Saturday, the MIT Lightweight Women took on University at Buffalo and Simmons in the varsity lightweight eight and second varsity lightweight eight. In the varsity eight, MIT came away with their first win of the season, rowing a strong race to finish ahead of the Buffalo lightweights and the Simmons openweight varsity eight.
The MIT lightweights then took on the Simmons openweights in the second varsity eight race. It was an exciting stroke for stoke race where the Simmons crew pulled ahead in the last fifteen strokes to finish just three seconds ahead of MIT. According to Coach Claire Kostrzewski, "Coach Booth and I were extremely impressed by the race the 2V put together - the intensity with which they raced was extraordinary."
On Sunday, the lightweight women raced Stanford in the varsity lightweight eight and novice lightweight four. In the eight, MIT raced aggressively, but could not find the speed to match Stanford who came across the line in 6:49.0, MIT finished with a time of 7:00.9.
In the novice fours race, later in the morning, MIT fought through very windy conditions on the race course and rowed strongly against Stanford. In the end, Stanford finished first ahead of both MIT fours.
Next up, Tech takes on University of Massachusetts on Saturday, April 26th.
