CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The MIT novice lightweight eight had its best performance of the season this past weekend by defeating both the Georgetown University second varsity and novice eights. The victory was a significant milestone for the Engineers as the Hoyas are an established top-tier performer in the lightweight league.
With Lauren McCarthy stroking her first race, the crew was able to row with a longer, stronger rhythm which enabled it to take the lead right from the start and build on it throughout the race. MIT clocked in with a time of 7:49.8 while Georgetown's second varsity finished in 7:55.6. The Hoyas' novice eight was third in 7:59.9 and the Engineers' varsity/novice eight recorded a time of 8:37.4 for fourth place.
The boat that rowed behind McCarthy was comprised of Kate Madden, Erqui Lui, Jessica Lynch, Clarissa Zimmerman, Lisa Nakano, Jessica Lee, Kelly Chang, and Jo Duh. The varsity/novice eight boating included Kelly Chien, Cathy Yao, Kat Hung, Veronica Andrews, Veena Ramaswamy, Sherry Xie, Jessica Chiafair, Antonella Alunni, and Shu Wang.
Next up for the Engineers will be a battle with Radcliffe College on Saturday, May 7.
