HANOVER, N.H. - On the Connecticut River during a brisk afternoon, the MIT novice lightweight women completed its first fall race this weekend. For many women on the team, it was their first rowing race ever. The Engineers fielded two even boats at the Dartmouth Green Monster Freshman Invitational, and finished seventh and eighth overall in the women's race, with times of 17:27 and 17:29, respectively.
Making up the seventh -place boat were coxswain Mindy Du and from stern to bow, Xuefeng Chen, Aubrey Tatarowicz, Shanette Go, Ingrid Guha, Karen Castelletti, Katie Puckett, Dorota Grabowska, and Jenn Toyzer.
Following just back in eighth was a team comprised of coxswain Minna Du and from stern to bow, Margaret Wangeline, Renee Reder, Karen Sun, Barbara McCarragher, Aubrey Samost, Mel Medlock, Shan Tie, and Bernice Huang.
As a team, the novice units' combined times resulted in a strong third-place finish, edged out by the Dartmouth and Boston University novice openweight teams, but ahead of teams from Northeastern, UMass, and the University of Vermont.
The team's next race will be in Cambridge at the Foot of the Charles on November 18.
