LAKE QUINSIGAMOND, Mass. - The MIT lightweight women took on Holy Cross and Trinity at Lake Quinsigamond on Sunday. The varsity lightweight eight raced the second varsity crews of the Crusaders and Bantams, powering to their first win of the spring campaign.
The lightweight crew came off the line decisively and contended with Holy Cross through the middle of the race when the lightweights made a decisive move and were then able to keep extending their lead. The varsity crew was coxed by Mindy Du and rowed as Xuefeng Chen, Caroline Bogdan, Jessica Lynch, Kate Hoff, Hilda Buss, Kate Madden, Erqi Liu, and Kelly Chang. This victory marked the first win of the season for the Tech lightweight women who crossed the line with a time of 7:00.5.
The novice lightweight eight raced the Trinity and Holy Cross novice openweight eights and came in second, losing out by only four seconds to Holy Cross. The novice lightweight eight rowed an impressive race, charging hard down the 2,000-meter course and making it a close, exciting race until the end. The novice line-up was coxed by Shireen Warnock and boated as, Melody Kuna, Victoria Wang, Clare Flanagan, Amber Lin, Emma Jeffries, Catey Harwell, Megan Roth and Anne Shen.
In the varsity four event, the lightweights once again, rowed against the openweight squads of Holy Cross and Trinity. In their first race as a four, the crew came in fourth place after a very good effort down the course. The crew was coxed by Minna Du and rowed as, Liane Fang, Tiffany Iaconis, Risha Mars and Sammi Wyman.
According to Coach Claire Kostrzewski, "Today was a good day of racing for all our crews. The varsity eight rowed a very solid race and it is good to come away with a win."
The Engineers take on the University of Massachusetts this Saturday at home on the Charles River.
