CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - This past weekend, the MIT varsity lightweight women raced the University of Massachusetts lightweights and the novice lightweight women took on the openweight novice crew of Northeastern. Both MIT squads rowed impressively in its first home race of the spring season, as both the varsity and the novice crews came away with victories.
The MIT varsity lightweight eight broke down into two fours to take on UMass and its varsity lightweight four. This was the first race of the year for the Engineers in fours and both the "A" and "B" boats beat the UMass crew.
It was a tough day for racing on the Charles, with very rough water which is difficult to negotiate in a four-person shell. However, the Engineers handled the conditions well on their way to the first and second-place finishes with times of 7:44.4 and 7:58.8, respectively.
In the novice four events, the Engineers faced the second novice openweight crew from Northeastern University. The lightweights raced aggressively to put themselves ahead and come across the line three seconds ahead of Northeastern, with a time of 8:09.1. Although the "B" four placed third in the race, they were not far off the pace and put in a solid performance.
MIT returns to the Charles River next week to face Radcliffe and the University of Central Florida. The varsity eight race is scheduled to start at 9:24 a.m.
