MIT Rookies Enjoy Another Strong Performance at the Belly of the Carnegie

Nov. 11, 2007

Princeton, N.J. - Under clear, crisp skies, the MIT novice lightweight women competed at the Belly of the Carnegie in Princeton on Sunday. The Belly is a freshman-only regatta for both men and women, but unlike the men's competition that holds weight class-specific races, the women's race pits openweights and lightweights against each other in the same event.

The novice lightweights took the experience gleaned from last weekend's Green Monster Regatta at Dartmouth to set a more natural rhythm over the three-mile course. The change paid off as the crew finished 17th of 24, edging the only other lightweight crew in the field, Georgetown, by 2.2 seconds. The Engineers also beat out several openweight boats including all entries from both Rutgers and George Washington University.

The novice lightweights will close out the fall season at home this Saturday at the Foot of the Charles.
