Tech Concludes Fall With Foot of the Charles

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The women's openweight crew wrapped up its fall racing season at home with the Foot of the Charles on Saturday. Originally a scrimmage for local teams, the regatta has grown into a competitive event that marks the end of fall racing for many teams throughout New England. The format prioritizes the novice eight, with non-freshman rowers racing in fours.

Due to strong winds and heavy rain from the remnants of Hurricane Ida, the race course was relocated upstream, running from the Riverside Boathouse to the Head of the Charles finish line - a distance of approximately 4000 meters.

MIT's openweight novice eight raced very well to finish 10th in a field of 26. Early on, the crew received a challenge from Dartmouth College, and while the Big Green did manage to pass the Cardinal and Grey, they never completely broke free. Heading into the final turn at the Eliot Bridge, Tech came on strong and regained some lost ground to finish in a time of 14:54.2. The Engineers placed ahead of the top entries from UMass, Rutgers, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Boston College, and the MIT lightweight entry, while defending champion Brown won the race by a comfortable margin.

Racing in two fours the varsity rowers were happy with their performance, but some steering difficulties bore a price for both boats. Among 46 crews the "A" four finished 26th, and the "B" four placed 41st.

Next, the team transitions into land training before heading to Florida in the new year for the annual winter training trip.
