CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT's openweight women's crew team will begin the spring portion of its season this weekend at the Beanpot Regatta here on the Charles River in Cambridge. The Beanpot is the first of six spring regattas for the Engineers, a slate that also includes the Patriot League championship and Eastern Association of Women's Rowing Colleges (EAWRC) Sprints.
In the Beanpot, Tech will compete against local crews from Boston College, Boston University, Northeastern University and Harvard-Radcliffe. The Cardinal and Gray will race four boats, a pair of Varsity 4 crews and two Varsity 8 crews. The winner of the first Varsity 8 race earns possession of the Beanpot trophy for the year while the team that earns the most overall points in all events is also recognized.
The Beanpot Regatta will be broadcast live by Northeastern and can be viewed at http://www.gonu.com/rowing_stream.
The Engineers will also compete in the Patriot League championship on April 29 at the Cooper River park in Cherry Hill, N.J., as they enter their third season of affiliation with the league. MIT was recently picked fifth in the conference's preseason poll, while receiving one of 12 first place votes. Defending conference champion, Bucknell College, earned the top spot in the preseason rankings and will look to capture its seventh-straight league title next month.
Tech will row on the Charles River in two other events, the Boston College Cup race on May 5 and against the University at Buffalo and the University of Massachusetts on April 21. MIT will also travel to Washington, D.C. for the George Washington Invitational on April 6 and 7 before capping its season at the EAWRC Sprints back in Cherry Hill on May 13.
