Women’s Openweight Crew Earns Second-Place at George Washington Invite
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The MIT women's openweight crew team traveled to Washington, D.C. to compete in the George Washington Invitational on Friday and Saturday, racing against Duquesne University, the U.S. Naval Academy and Georgetown University in a series of head-to-head races. The Engineers had their best-ever showing at the regatta, finishing second in overall team points, with 84 total points, behind only the host George Washington (90) and ahead of the teams from Duquesne (0), Navy (56), Georgetown (12) and St. Joseph's University (81).
Tech was powered by the strength of its Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 crews, both of which swept their races at the regatta, winning three races apiece.
Racing against Duquesne in the first round, the Cardinal and Gray easily won all four races, Third Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8, V8 and V4, with open water margins.
Saturday's races against Navy were the most competitive of the weekend, with crews trading back-and-forth leads throughout all four events. The Midshipmen got the better of MIT in battles among the Second and Third Varsity 8 while Tech had the upper-hand in the Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 races. The Third Varsity 8 was the most closely contested race, with just 1.5 seconds separating the two crews.
After wins over Georgetown in the Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 later in the day on Saturday, the Engineers had to await the results of the George Washington and Navy races to see where they would wind up in the final team standings. The Colonials took a pair of thrilling races in the Varsity 8 and 2V8, by only 0.7 and 1.0 seconds, respectively, to clinch the Howard W. Wilkins Bowl.
MIT will host the University at Buffalo and the University of Massachusetts in two weeks on the Charles River. The Varsity 8 race begins at 10:18 a.m. on Saturday, April 21 and will be followed by 2V8 and V4 races.
