CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – It was the official start of the crew season for the MIT women's openweight crew team this afternoon as the Engineers competed in the prestigious Head of the Charles regatta. The Engineer's varsity team participated in the Women's Championship Eights event, one of 40 entries in the completion.
MIT had a solid start to the race, turning in a split of 4:18.595 at the Riverside time check. At the end of the three-mile course the Engineers had turned in a clocking of 18:09.326 to finish just ahead of a University of Tennessee team for the 30th fastest time in a very competitive field. Three buoy violations cost MIT 30 seconds, however, dropping them to 34th overall to finish ahead of Villanova, Connecticut and Navy.
MIT will race again next weekend, traveling to New Jersey for the Princeton Chase on Saturday morning.
