CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In its first action of the spring season, the MIT women's openweight crew team took on crews from Boston College in three events on the Charles River today. In the Varsity 8 competition it was a close one between the Engineers and the Eagles, with the edge going to BC be less than a second at the finish.
On a blustery day, the crews had to contend with a strong cross-headwind over the 2,000-meter course. The Varsity 8 teams were first up and contended for the MIT-BC Cup. It was a close finish for the two boats, one that saw Boston College just edge out MIT by 0.8 seconds in 7:50.9
Boston College also took the other two races contested. In the second Varsity 8 the Eagles came in just a tick over 10 seconds ahead of MIT, with the Eagles' Varsity 4 boat also defeating the Engineers' entry, crossing the line over 40 seconds ahead of their competition.
MIT will be back in action next weekend when it travels to Washington, D.C. to compete in the George Washington Invitational on April 12 and 13 on the Potomac River.
