Women’s Openweight Crew Announces 2013-14 Freshman Class

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Five freshmen are scheduled to join the ranks of the MIT women's openweight crew team for the 2013-14 season head coach Holly Metcalf has announced. Four of the five come from the East Coast, with the fifth hailing from California.

"We are delighted to introduce such an outstanding and talented freshman class," said Metcalf. "These individuals have demonstrated a record of leadership, competitiveness, character, and a commitment to excellence during their high school careers. MIT is a place where serious athletics and a world-class education come together, and we are so lucky to have found candidates that are able to share and represent this vision. We welcome them to the family with open arms."

Gabriella Baracchini (San Diego, Calif., Torrey Pines High School): Rowed with the San Diego Rowing Club … participated in dance and skiing in high school … National Honor Society … AP Scholar with Distinction.

Stephanie Bousleiman (Bayville, N.Y., Locust Valley High School): Rowed with the Sagamore Rowing Association … Long Island News 12 Scholar Athlete Award (2013) … New York State Scholastic Rowing Association Scholar/Athlete Team Award for Sagamore Varsity Girls (2010-2013) … second-place in Women's Senior Double at NY State Championships (2013) … second-place in Women's HS Quads at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta (2012) … first-place in Women's HS Quads at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta (2011) … second-place in Women's Quads at Textile River Regatta (2012) … third-place in Women's 4+ in C-Championship at Youth Nationals (2012) … second-place in Women's Varsity 8+ at Long Island Junior Rowing Championships (2011) … second-place in Women's Varsity Quad at Long Island Junior Rowing Championships (2011) … raced at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Women's 8+ (2010) … National Honor Society … French Honor Society … Salutatorian … AP Scholar with Honor.

Gabriella Del Hierro (Baltimore, Md., Roland Park Country School): Rowed with the Baltimore Rowing Club … member of a high school crew that was a four-time city champion in Baltimore … also participated in swimming … Cum Laude … Spanish Honors Society … Math Honors Society … secretary of the senior class.

Miranda Kotidis (Framingham, Mass., Middlesex School): Four letters in crew … placed eighth in New England junior year with Middlesex 1st boat … team captain as a senior … also played soccer … AP Scholar with Distinction … recipient of Massachusetts Aspirations in Computing Affiliate Award.

Maria Messick (Washington, D.C., National Cathedral School): Rowed with the TPC Club … 2012 Scholastic National Champion … 2012 Silver at Stotesburry … third at Mid-Atlantic Erg Sprints 2013 … also ran cross country … Cum Laude … National Merit Scholar.
