Record-Tying Result Propels Women's Openweight Squad at the EAWRC Sprints

May 21, 2006

COOPER RIVER, N.J. - The MIT women made team history last weekend in the EAWRC Sprints as both the varsity four and novice eight boats raced faster and finished higher in the final results than they ever had before since separating into two teams and moving to Division I.

MIT's first race of the day was the novice eight's heat with Northeastern, Dartmouth, Yale and Rutgers, finishing in that order. Although MIT placed fifth in its heat, the Engineers were a mere 1.7 seconds behind Rutgers. It was a fight for the finish between the two crews with MIT ahead by a seat for a majority of the race. In the afternoon final, MIT crossed the finish line strongly positioned in third place behind Navy and Pennsylvania. MIT finished ahead of George Washington by nearly eight seconds. The boat's season of dedication and hard work prevailed in Tech's final output of the campaign.

The varsity four authored the most impressive MIT crew at Sprints. Placing third in their morning heat right behind Yale, they set the tone for the afternoon Petite Final. The final was a seven boat race with MIT finishing third. The crew looked strong as they crossed the finish line right on the tail of Georgetown. The final times were Princeton 8:17.6, Georgetown 8:38.4, MIT 8:42.1, Rutgers 8:48.0, Columbia 8:48.6, Navy 8:53.0 and Boston College 9:02.3.

The novice four was a final-only race in the afternoon. Although it was an openweight event, the boat included three lightweight novice rowers. Having rowed together for only less than two weeks, they put together an impressive performance against much larger opponents. The final outcome: Northeastern 8:31.2, Princeton 8:35.8, Georgetown 8:41.5, MIT 9:05.7, Syracuse 9:19.5, and Boston College 9:38.5.

MIT's result in the Petite Final of the novice eight equalled the Engineers' best finish in the event, which was initially set in 1983 during one of the program's most dominant Sprints performances.
