PEMBROKE, N.H. - Two weeks after taking gold in the four and silver in the eight at the Textile River Regatta, the openweight women traveled to the New Hampshire Championships to test their improved speed for a second time. It was a cool and sunny autumn day, with a tail wind to help the crews along.
This time around the team first raced in fours, then competed a second time in eights. Of 20 crews, the fours placed second, fourth, and 14th, while a four comprised of MIT lightweight women took 11th. Simmons College won the race by a margin of only one second in a circuit that lasted over 17 minutes.
The Engineers were determined as they took to the water again in eights, especially having lost to Simmons in the varsity eight race at the Textile. Their focus paid off, as they rowed strong from start to finish to win the race. Second place went to the Tech lightweight women, and a combination open/light eight from MIT took fourth, edging out fifth-place Simmons by five seconds.
Coach Metcalf was pleased to earn the victory, as well as to see the crews row powerfully at the higher rate they had been working on to prepare for the Head of the Charles.
"I (also) thought that the combo eight had a great showing after having rowed together only three times," noted Metcalf. "That mixed lineup should have a good race in the club eight category next weekend."
In addition to the success of the openweight and lightweight women, the heavyweight men also emerged victorious in both the eight and four. They won both races by commanding margins. All the crews now look toward the Head of the Charles, the biggest race of the fall season.
