Tech Tackles Belly of the Carnegie

Nov. 11, 2007

PRINCETON, N.J. - Crews from all four squads at MIT traveled to Princeton to race in the Belly of the Carnegie for the first time on Sunday. An invitational race exclusively for freshman/novice crews, the Belly includes competition from numerous EARC/EAWRC schools.

On an absolutely beautiful autumn day the novice openweight women took to the water for their second race more calm and focused than they were at Dartmouth a week earlier. It was a far more exciting event, as the crew passed a boat from George Washington early in the race, and worked to fend off others who started afterward. As the Engineers rounded the final bend they found themselves in a pack of half-a-dozen crews all sprinting toward the finish, and they pushed hard all the way to the line.

In the end, Tech finished 11th of 24, behind crews from Princeton, Dartmouth, Cornell, Yale, and Penn, but ahead of all the entries from Georgetown, Columbia, Villanova, Rutgers, and George Washington.

"The set was a little off, but I think we rowed a lot harder this time, and the rhythm was definitely better," commented stroke seat Lyndz Steeves.

"I think we accomplished what we came down here to do," remarked novice coach Aaron Benson. "We lost to some fast crews, but we were in the top half of a field filled with Sprints schools that have strong rowing traditions. Now we just get to have fun finishing the fall season on our home course next weekend at the Foot of the Charles."
