Womens Fencing Finishes Runner-up at New England Championships
SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - On Sunday, the MIT women's fencing team traveled to Mount Holyoke College for the 2010 New England Championships. Three Engineers had top-three finishes and five others advanced beyond qualifying as MIT took second in the event behind the Eagles of Boston College.
Sophomore Molly Kozminsky finished 11-3 in qualifying and improved on last year's third-place finish to capture runner-up in sabre. Annabeth Gellman (12-2) took sixth and Elena Tatarchenko (13-1) closed in ninth, helping the MIT squad finish tied with Boston College for first in the weapon.
At foil, Cordelia Link led the way for the Cardinal and Gray, posting a 10-4 record in qualifying and ending third overall. Jenna Caldwell's efforts (10-4) were landed her in ninth, and Lindley Graham (13-0) was perfect in qualifying but only managed to end in twelfth. MIT's foil crew finished second behind Boston College as a team.
In epee, senior Stephanie Shin (10-4) survived a tough qualifying group en route to a third-place finish, her best showing among four years in the top ten. Sophie Monahan (10-4) closed in seventh and Kirstin Hessler (8-6) rounded out Tech's epee team, which finished third behind Vassar College and Brandeis University.
The MIT fencing team hits the strips again on Wednesday when the men's and women's squads host the 3rd Annual Beanpot in DuPont Gymnasium at 5:00 p.m.
