COLUMBUS, Ohio. – Making her third appearance at the NCAA Fencing Championship junior Robin Shin (Brookline, Mass.) finished in 20th place in the sabre competition. The lone Division III representative, she defeated foes from Notre Dame, St. John’s, Harvard, North Carolina, and UC San Diego.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – For the second year in a row junior Robin Shin (Brookline, Mass.) earned a spot at the upcoming NCAA Fencing Championship, this time courtesy of a fourth-place sabre finish at the NCAA Northeast Regional held on Sunday at Boston College. Freshman Sarah Alkilany (Brooklyn, N.Y.) ranked eighth in the epee competition, resulting in the first at-large spot for the field. Freshman Rebecca Shi (Plainsboro, N.J.) had the best showing for the foil team as she secured 24th place.
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior Robin Shin (Brookline, Mass.) was selected the Women’s Fencer of the Year by the Northeast Fencing Conference, becoming the first person in the history of the MIT women’s fencing program to accomplish this feat. She also represented the Engineers on the sabre all-star first team while senior Molly Kozminsky (Port Matilda, Pa.) was tabbed to the sabre second team. Freshman Sarah Alkilany (Brooklyn, N.Y.) rounded out the Cardinal and Gray with epee second team accolades.
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – At the New England Intercollegiate Fencing Conference Championship on Saturday, junior Robin Shin (Brookline, Mass.) won the second sabre title of her career while freshman Sarah Alkilany (Brooklyn, N.Y.) placed third in the epee competition. MIT finished fourth out of 14 teams in the overall rankings while a record of 32-6 put the sabre squad atop the standings for the fourth year in a row.
BOSTON, Mass. – At the annual Beanpot Invitational hosted by Harvard University, the MIT women’s fencing team defeated Brandeis University (17-10) but fell to Boston College (18-9) and Harvard (21-6) on Tuesday. The sabre squad compiled a total of 14-13, followed by the epee team (11-16), and the foil unit (8-19).
WALTHAM Mass. – At the annual Eric Sollee Invitational hosted by Brandeis University, the MIT women’s fencing team compiled a 2-3 record on Saturday. The Engineers topped Hunter College (23-4) and Haverford College (17-10), and fell to University of Pennsylvania (18-9), Johns Hopkins University (15-12), and NYU (14-13).
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – In its first action of the New Year, the MIT women’s fencing team went 4-2 in the second and final Northeast Fencing Conference competition of the season held this past weekend at Boston College. The Engineers defeated Tufts University (17-10), Smith College (21-6), Dartmouth College (18-9), and Vassar College (14-13) but lost to the host Eagles (15-12) and Brown University (21-6).
WALTHAM, Mass. – Competing at the Brandeis University Invitational on Sunday, the MIT women’s fencing team defeated UNC (14-13) but fell to Yale (14-13), St. John’s (24-3), Cornell (17-10), and Brown (19-8). The victory over the Tar Heels was the first for the Engineers since 2004 and seventh in program history.
DURHAM, N.H. – Behind the strength of outstanding performances by the saber and epee squads, the MIT women’s fencing team registered a 5-1 record in its first Northeast Fencing Conference competition of the season at the University of New Hampshire on Saturday. The Engineers defeated UMass Amherst (21-6), Wellesley College (20-7), UNH (23-4), Boston University (19-8), and Brandeis University (19-8), but fell to Sacred Heart (16-11).
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The MIT women’s fencing team recorded a trio of top-10 finishes in its 2011-12 debut at The Big One hosted by Smith College on Saturday. Junior Robin Shin (Brookline, Mass.) won the sabre division for the second year in a row while both freshman Sarah Alkilany (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and senior Breanna Peterman (Selden, N.Y.) finished second and ninth, respectively, in the epee competition.
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In conjunction with its annual alumni meet, the MIT fencing program dedicated its expanded and improved salle d’armes on Saturday, Oct. 22. The renovation was the first for this facility since the completion of the duPont Athletic Center in 1959.
