CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – In its first action of the New Year, the MIT women's fencing team went 4-2 in the second and final Northeast Fencing Conference competition of the season held this past weekend at Boston College. The Engineers defeated Tufts University (17-10), Smith College (21-6), Dartmouth College (18-9), and Vassar College (14-13) but lost to the host Eagles (15-12) and Brown University (21-6).
Junior Robin Shin (Brookline, Mass.) was a force to be reckoned with as she compiled a total of 17-1 which powered the sabre squad to a 36-18 record. Senior Molly Kozminsky (Port Matilda, Pa.) had a tally of 14-4 while junior Elisabeth Morant (Chicago, Ill.) came in at 5-13. The trio registered wins over Dartmouth (9-0), Smith (7-2), BC (6-3), Tufts (5-4), and Vassar (5-4) with their only loss being a 5-4 decision versus Brown.
The epee team comprised of freshman Sarah Alkilany (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and seniors Kirsten Hessler (Roswell, Ga.), Breanna Peterman (Selden, N.Y.), and Rachel Williams (Merritt Island, Fla.) racked up a ledger of 31-23 as the Cardinal and Gray swept Smith, overpowered Dartmouth (7-2), and edged out BC and Tufts by a 5-4 score. Alkilany paced the squad with a mark of 10-6, followed by Hessler (9-7), Peterman (7-7), and Williams (5-3).
Senior Julia Hopkins (New York, N.Y.) was the top performer for the foil contingent as she finished at 9-9. Junior Julia Kimmerly (Middlesex, Vt.) recorded a 5-7 outing as senior Ana Escalante (Los Angeles, Calif.) earned a record of 6-12. Senior Elizabeth Min (Little Neck, N.Y.) rounded out the group with a tally of 1-5. MIT concluded the day with a total of 21-33 which featured a 7-2 win over Tufts and 5-4 decisions against Smith and Vassar.
Next up for the Engineers will be the Eric Sollee Invitational hosted by Brandeis University on Saturday, Feb. 4.
