Engineers Pick Up Two Wins at Eric Sollee Invitational
WALTHAM Mass. – At the annual Eric Sollee Invitational hosted by Brandeis University, the MIT women's fencing team compiled a 2-3 record on Saturday. The Engineers topped Hunter College (23-4) and Haverford College (17-10), and fell to University of Pennsylvania (18-9), Johns Hopkins University (15-12), and NYU (14-13).
The sabre unit comprised of senior Molly Kozminsky (Port Matilda, Pa.) and juniors Elisabeth Morant (Chicago, Ill.) and Robin Shin (Brookline, Mass.) generated a 28-17 team total and won all five rounds. The trio dismissed Hunter by a 7-2 margin, defeated Haverford by a 6-3 score, and edged out Penn, Johns Hopkins, and NYU, 5-4. Shin led the way with a 14-1 ledger, followed by Kozminsky at 12-3, and Morant at 2-13.
The epee team also had an impressive outing, compiling a record of 27-18. MIT overpowered Hunter (8-1) and topped Haverford (6-3) and NYU (5-4) while recording tough 5-4 losses to Penn and Johns Hopkins. Freshman Sarah Alkilany (Brooklyn, N.Y.) set the tone with a tally of 12-4 while senior Kirsten Hessler (Roswell, Ga.) came in at 9-6. Senior Breanna Peterman (Selden, N.Y.) went 5-5 on the day as classmate Rachel Williams (Merritt Island, Fla.) finished at 1-4.
The foil squad registered wins over Hunter (8-1) and Haverford (5-4) en route to a 19-26 ledger. Senior Julia Hopkins (New York, N.Y.) paced the Engineers with a 9-5 performance while classmate Ana Escalante (Los Angeles, Calif.) had a mark of 7-8. Junior Julia Kimmerly (Middlesex, Vt.) contributed a total of 2-7 as freshman Rebecca Shi (Plainsboro, N.J.) rounded out the squad with a tally of 1-5.
Next up for MIT (12-10) will be the Beanpot at Harvard University on Tuesday, Feb. 14.
