MIT Goes 4-2 in NFC Competition

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – In its return to action since the end of the fall semester, the MIT women's fencing team recorded a 4-2 performance in the final Northeast Fencing Conference (NFC) competition of the season held on Saturday at Brown University. The Engineers fell to the host Bears (19-8) and Boston College (15-12) but defeated Tufts University (16-11), Smith College (23-4), Dartmouth College (19-8), and Vassar College (18-9).

Led by senior Robin Shin's (Brookline, Mass.) ledger of 15-3, the sabre squad turned in a total of 42-12. Classmate Annabeth Gellman (Ridgewood, N.J.) compiled a total of 14-4, followed by freshman Madison Douglas (Concord, Mass.) at 9-5. Sophomore Eliza Mace (Lansdowne, Va.) rounded out the contingent by winning all four of her bouts. The Engineers blanked Smith, Dartmouth, and Vassar while defeating Tufts (7-2) and Boston College (5-4).

Freshmen Laura Jarin-Lipschitz (Rosemont, Pa.) and Mounica Paturu (Plainsboro, N.J.) both racked up records of 12-5 in the epee competition. Sophomore Sarah Alkilany (Brooklyn, N.Y.) went 9-7 while freshman Manting Lao (Columbus, Ohio) picked up a win against Smith. MIT amassed a record of 34-20 which featured a sweep of Smith, a 7-2 victory versus Dartmouth, and narrow decisions over Vassar (6-3) and Brown (5-4).

The foil team went 20-34 on the day and posted 5-4 wins over Tufts and Smith. Senior Julia Kimmerly (Middlesex, Vt.) led the way with a mark of 10-8 as sophomore Rebecca Shi (Plainsboro, N.J.) had a record of 6-12. Freshman Ceri Riley (Kirkland, Wash.) earned a trio of victories while sophomore Sherry Ren (Katy, Texas) defeated her foe from Dartmouth.

Next up for MIT (10-8, 10-2 NFC) will be its final home competition of the season, the Eric Sollee Invitational, which will be held on Sunday, Feb. 3.
