CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - This past weekend, the MIT women's fencing team competed in the 112th IFA Championship, the oldest collegiate championship in the country. The Engineers finished 11th out of 12 teams, which include Boston College, Brandeis University, Brown University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Harvard University, New York University, University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University, Vassar College and Yale University.
The foil team posted the highest ranking for Tech as it took seventh place. Nancy Hua and Barette Strickland both posted records of 6-5 in the "B" and "C" pools while Gemma Mendel went 3-8 in the "A" pool. Shauna Jin and Joy Perkinson, both competing in the top sabre pool, recorded ledgers of 3-4 and 1-3. Lynn Wang had a solid showing with a 5-6 total as Yushin Chen finished at 4-7, resulting in a team finish of eighth place. Joanna Tong led MIT's efforts in epee with a 6-5 mark in the "C" pool. Lele Yu notched a total of 3-8 while Mika Tomczak went 0-11, en route to a 12th place finish for the squad.
