Engineers Register 5-1 Mark in NFC Competition

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - For the second year in a row the MIT women's fencing team kicked off Northeast Fencing Conference (NFC) action with a 5-1 record. The Engineers defeated Boston University (22-5), Wellesley College (19-8), UMass-Amherst (21-6), host University of New Hampshire (21-6), and Sacred Heart University (14-13) before falling to Brandeis University (15-12). Cordelia Link paced the Cardinal and Gray's efforts with a 14-1 ledger.
Link's top mark helped guide the foil team to a 44-10 record as it swept BU and UMass-Amherst and also posted an 8-1 decision over UNH. Jenna Caldwell bolstered Tech's total with a tally of 15-2 while Lindley Graham went 11-6. Julia Hopkins registered a 2-1 performance as Shuchen Song won both of her bouts.
Powered by Molly Kozminsky's 16-2 ledger, the sabre squad compiled a 38-16 mark that featured a sweep of Wellesley and an 8-1 win over UNH. Elena Tatarchenko posted a record of 10-5 while Lauren Chilton finished at 11-6. Laura Evans rounded out the squad with a 1-3 outing.
The epee team picked up a pair of 6-3 victories over BU and UMass-Amherst en route to a 27-27 team total. Stephanie Shin led the charge with a 12-6 ledger, followed by Kirsten Hessler (10-8), Sophie Monahan (3-7), and Breanna Peterman (2-6).
