MIT Defeats Cornell at Brandeis Invite

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In its final competition before the holiday break, the MIT women’s fencing team compiled a 1-3 record at the Brandeis University Invitational on Sunday. The Engineers defeated Cornell University (16-11) but fell to St. John’s University (14-13), Yale University (16-11), and Brown University (16-11). Cordelia Link had the best outing for the Cardinal and Gray (7-6), as she won 11 of her 12 bouts.

Behind Link’s stellar performance, the foil team registered a 20-16 mark which featured an 8-1 win over St. John’s. Jenna Caldwell notched a total of 7-5 while Lindley Graham went 2-10.

A sweep of Cornell and a 6-3 victory over Yale helped power the sabre squad to a 20-16 tally. Molly Kozminsky led the charge with a total of 8-4 as Elena Tatarchenko had a record of 7-5. Lauren Chilton bolstered MIT’s efforts with a mark of 5-6 while Laura Evans fell in the only bout she competed in.

The epee team battled to an 11-25 record as Stephanie Shin paced the Engineers with a 5-7 tally. Kirsten Hessler was 2-10 on the day while Breanna Peterman and Sophie Monahan both compiled marks of 2-4.
