MIT Downs Nichols, 4-0, In NCAA Tournament Rematch

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. In a rematch of last season's NCAA Tournament opening round contest, the MIT field hockey team downed Nichols College, 4-0, on Wednesday night at Jack Barry Field. Kameron Klauber led the way with a pair of goals, as the Engineers improved to 7-1 with the win. Nichols lost for just the second time this season, falling to 5-2.

Klauber put Tech on the board in the 20th minute, taking the ball at midfield and, after a long run into the circle, flipping it past Bison goalkeeper Krista-Jean Forand. That score would hold up into the half, as the Cardinal and Gray outshot the visitors, 13-2, in the frame.

Kimberly Barker increased the MIT advantage early in the second stanza, knocking home a rebound from her position on the left post for her seventh tally of the season. Klauber struck again just under 12 minutes later, deflecting a blast by Molly McShane past Forand to regain the team scoring lead with her eighth goal of the year. Viveka Mishra would record her first collegiate score with just over 11 minutes to go to cap the scoring.

The Bison had a number of chances late but were unable to break through the Tech defense. Eileen Clinton corralled the ball at the top of the circle with 14:45 to go but MIT goalkeeper Keri Dixon was able to make a spectacular sprawling save to preserve the clean sheet. Clinton was also denied by Michelle Teplensky's defensive save late in the first half.

Dixon stopped four shots to pick up her second shutout of the 2010 campaign. Forand had five saves in the losing effort.

The Cardinal and Gray will be back in action on Saturday, traveling to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Springfield College for an 11:00 a.m. contest. The Bison will host Commonwealth Coast Conference rival Gordon College on Friday at 5:00 p.m.
