DUDLEY, Mass. – Freshman Caitlin Mackey (San Diego, Calif.) and Kimberly Barker (Camden, N.Y.) combined for a pair of goals as MIT edged host Nichols College, 2-1, in a non-conference field hockey action on Vendetti Field Wednesday evening. With the win the Engineers improve to 7-2 overall while Nichols falls to 4-2.
Mackey's game winner came just over 12 minutes into the second stanza, as part of a 16-shot assault for Tech during the frame. Barker picked up her second assist of the night to break a 1-1 tie and help the Cardinal and Gray pick up the road win.
After Chelsea Correia (Seekonk, Mass.) put the Bison on the board early in the contest, Barker and Mackey needed less than 10 minutes to even things up. Barker fed the ball past Nichols' keeper Molly Melanson (Simsbury, Conn.) to a waiting Mackey, who pushed into the lower left corner of the goal for her fifth tally of the season.
The Engineers had a number of chances to extend their lead during the second half, peppering Melanson with 10 shots on goal and drawing a Nichols yellow-card midway through the frame. However, the Bison defense stood tall and Melanson made nine of her 12 saves during the period.
Casey Landry (Peabody, Mass.) made four saves to pick up the victory in goal for MIT.
Tech will return to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday, September 24, hosting Springfield College at 1:00 p.m. Nichols travels to Endicott College on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. Commonwealth Coast Conference matchup.
