No. 20 Engineers Surge Past Lasell, 7-1

Senior Molly McShane

NEWTON, Mass. – Five unanswered goals in the second half helped power nationally-ranked No. 20 MIT past Lasell College in a non-conference field hockey game on Tuesday afternoon. The Engineers were led by senior Molly McShane (Lake Bluff, Ill.) who recorded two goals and an assist.

MIT put the pressure on immediately following the opening whistle as it earned four penalty corners in the first four minutes of action and then got on the board a minute later when McShane redirected a feed from sophomore Elizabeth Dethy (Morristown, N.J.). The Lasers quickly registered the equalizer, but a strike by junior Maddy Wharton (Swarthmore, Pa.) on a penalty corner put the visitors ahead for good in the ninth minute. The Cardinal and Gray produced 12 shots, eight of which were turned away by Lasell goalie Cassie Aviles, and received five penalty corners but it could not increase its cushion during the remainder of the first half.

McShane ended the Engineers' scoring drought after 3:56 elapsed in the second stanza while junior Michelle Teplensky's (Somers, N.Y.) first goal of her career extended the lead to 4-1 exactly 10 minutes later. In the 57th minute, McShane's initial shot was turned away but she corralled the rebound and found senior Kimberly Barker (Camden, N.Y.) for the goal. Freshmen Isabella DiDio (Jenkintown, Pa.) and Siobhan Rigby (Richmond, Va.) tallied their first intercollegiate markers to round out the scoring.

Tech's defense was a force to be reckoned with as Lasell recorded its only shots of the second half during the final 10 minutes of the game. One attempt resulted in sophomore goalie Jenna Klein's (Parma, Ohio) lone save of the day.

MIT (3-0) continues its five-game road trip on Wednesday, Sept. 5 at local foe Simmons College.
