BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Kimberly Barker (Camden, N.Y.) earned two assists as MIT defeated Simmons College, 3-1, in a non-conference field hockey game on Wednesday night. With the win, the nationally-ranked No. 20 Engineers lifted their record to 4-0 on the season.
MIT struck first for the fourth game in a row as sophomore Caitlin Mackey (San Diego, Calif.) redirected a feed from Barker after 1:03 expired. The Engineers then doubled their lead in the 14th minute following their third straight penalty corner. After the ball made its way around the arc, Barker sent a pass to junior Molly Duffy (New Providence, N.J.) who tipped it in for the goal.
The visitors' final tally of the night came with less than six minutes left in the frame. Senior Molly McShane (Lake Bluff, Ill.) corralled a ball that was sent up the middle and passed it through the circle where freshman Morgan Gulliver (Stamford, Conn.) quickly put it past Simmons' goalie. The Sharks responded by registering thier first shot in 20 minutes, which was followed by eight more attempts on goal and three penalty corners but they could not get on the board before the intermission.
Despite putting 10 shots on net during the first 15 minutes of the second half, MIT was unable to increase its margin. Simmons, however, continued to attack and eventually ended the shutout in the 54th minute on a penalty stroke. The game became a back-and-forth affair down the stretch but neither squad was able to add to the score.
Next up for MIT will be a trip to No. 3 Middlebury College, the 2011 NCAA Championship runner-up, on Sunday, Sept. 9.
