CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The MIT field hockey team picked up its first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) win by defeating Clark University, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon. Five different players found the back of the net for the Engineers (7-2, 1-1 NEWMAC) while junior Molly Duffy (New Providence, N.J.) earned a pair of assists. Junior Christabelle Kozlik (Emigrant, Mont.) provided the lone marker for the Cougars, whose ledger lowered to 3-3 on the year and 0-2 in conference play.
MIT opened the scoring after 44 seconds expired when senior Molly McShane (Lake Bluff, Ill.) knocked in the rebound of junior Erin Kenney's (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) shot that was initially stopped by junior goalie Jordannah Saunders (Scarborough, Maine). The game became a back-and-forth affair with several charges at net as Clark's best opportunity was a 2-on-1 breakaway led by senior Mel Melkonian (Worcester, Mass.) but her run was broken up by junior Maddy Wharton (Swarthmore, Pa.) in the arc.
The Engineers extended their lead in the 18th minute as freshman Siobhan Rigby (Richmond, Va.) sent a strike from outside of the arc that glanced off a defender and went into the cage resulting in an own goal. The Cougars threatened to get on the board with about 10 minutes remaining in the half by maintaining possession around the arc. Sophomore Kiah Murphy (Westport, Mass.) unleashed a dangerous cross that went through the arc untouched until it was kicked out by sophomore goalie Jenna Klein (Parma, Ohio). In the 28th minute, freshman Olivia Massey (Greenbackville, Va.) managed to corral a loose bouncing ball and tap it in to give the hosts a 3-0 advantage. The Cougars were awarded a penalty stroke with 4:23 left in the half, but freshman Stacey Kraucunas's (Enfield, Conn.) attempt was denied courtesy of Klein's dive to the near post.
Like the opening frame, MIT wasted little time in registering a goal in the second half as Wharton buried a feed from Duffy on a penalty corner after two minutes elapsed. In the 40th minute, a Melkonian fastbreak resulted in a penalty stroke but her ensuing shot sailed past the cage. The Engineers replied four minutes later with a solo effort from Kenney to increase the score to 5-0. Clark ended the shutout bid in the 50th minute when Murphy's pass on a penalty corner went to senior Madeline Lutts (Salem, Mass.) who found Kozlik for the goal. The Cougars' defense withstood a series of penalty corners during the next 14 minutes, but MIT broke through as Duffy's cross was tipped in by freshman Isabella DiDio (Jenkintown, Pa.) at the near post.
Klein collected six saves in 58 minutes of action while freshman Paige Kennedy (Eastchester, N.Y.) turned away one shot in 12 minutes of relief. Saunders recorded six saves for the Cougars, including a mid-air stick save on a penalty stroke late in the second half.
Both squads resume action next week by hosting a pair of non-conference foes. MIT will take on Endicott College on Thursday, Sept. 27 while Clark does battle with Anna Maria College on Tuesday, Sept. 25.
