CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A balanced scoring attack coupled with a solid defensive effort powered the nationally-ranked No. 20 MIT field hockey team to a 10-0 victory over New England College on Friday night. In the season-opener for both squads, senior Molly Duffy (New Providence, N.J.) led the way with three goals and an assist.
Sophomore Molly McNamara (Auburn, Mass.) generated two goals and an assist while classmate Morgan Gulliver (Stamford, Conn.) posted one goal and two assists. Freshman Morgan O'Brien (Crofton, Md.) registered back-to-back goals in the second half as senior Maddy Wharton (Swarthmore, Pa.) earned two assists. Senior Michelle Teplensky (Somers, N.Y.) notched a goal and an assist while sophomore Olivia Massey (Greenbackville, Va.) rounded out the scoring. Junior Caitlin Mackey (San Diego, Calif.), sophomore Isabella DiDio (Jenkintown, Pa.), and freshman Krishna Jaitly (Bethesda, Md.) each earned an assist. In net, sophomore Evie Kyritsis (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) made one save in the shutout as classmate Laila Shehata (Bethesda, Md.) came away with a defensive save.
Senior goalie Courtney Duquette (Enfield, N.H.) racked up 14 saves for the Pilgrims while fellow classmate Jaclyn Papagni (Lynnfield, Mass.) recorded a pair of defensive saves. Junior Patricia Wright (Essex, Mass.) and senior Parica Mason (West Nyack, N.Y.) both contributed a defensive save to the visitors' cause.
NEC made the first charge at net and was awarded a penalty corner after two minutes elapsed. However, Teplensky stopped a feed in the middle of the arc to end what proved to be the Pilgrims' best opportunity of the first half. MIT countered with five shots and two penalty corners before Duffy redirected a feed from Gulliver in the 11th minute. The duo collaborated for another marker seven minutes later as Duffy completed the natural hat-trick in the 21st minute courtesy of a pass from McNamara. The Engineers continued to attack, recording six penalty corners and producing four shots on net, but NEC stayed within striking distance to enter halftime with a 3-0 deficit.
Gulliver sparked MIT's second-half scoring effort by connecting on feeds from Wharton and Dethy following a penalty corner six minutes into the frame. The Engineers then rattled off four goals in a five-minute span to establish an 8-0 advantage with just over 17 minutes left to play. McNamara netted a pair of markers two minutes apart while O'Brien scored 16 seconds after Teplensky. Following another O'Brien score, Massey posted the final goal of the night in the 64th minute.
The Pilgrims made a late surge as they received a penalty corner with 5:31 to go and saw Papagni generate a shot that was blocked by the MIT defense. Senior Kristen O'Connell (Melrose, Mass.) corralled the rebound but her attempt on net was stopped by Shehata. NEC was awarded another penalty corner; however, it was unable to maintain the momentum.
Next up for MIT will be a home game against local foe Simmons College on Thursday, Sept. 5 while the Pilgrims return to action on Sunday, Sept. 1 when they host Clark University.
