CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - New England College's Amanda Lester tallied three goals, including a penalty stroke, and two assists in a 5-1 win over MIT in non-conference field hockey action on Saturday. Playing their second game in as many days, the Pilgrims improved to 2-0 on the year while the Engineers dropped to 0-1.
Lester recorded her first point of the game by setting up Jodie Dresser for the opening goal after 1:10 had elapsed. Tech posted the equalizer over 10 minutes later when Anna Ayuso connected on a feed from Ashley Thomas during a scramble in front of the cage. Lester gave NEC the lead for good on an unassisted tally with 1:44 remaining in the first half.
The Pilgrims continued to attack in the second stanza, as they out-shot MIT, 10-2. NEC extended its advantage to 3-1 in the 43rd minute after Brittany Vogrin converted a feed from Lester. Lori Zaniboni found Lester for her second goal of the game 15 minutes later. Lester sealed the win by placing a penalty stroke into the top left side of the cage with less than three minutes to play.
MIT returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 9 when it faces host Vassar College at the Betty Richey Field Hockey Tournament. NEC will host Manhattanville College in its home-opener on Wednesday, Sept. 6 at 4:00 p.m.
