Field Hockey Picks Up First Win at Simmons
Sept. 12, 2008
BOSTON, Mass. - The MIT field hockey team got in to the win column with a 3-0 victory over Simmons on Thursday night. The Engineers (1-4) were paced by goals from Bensey Schnip, Virginia Nicholson and Anna Teruya, while goalkeeper Keri Dixon picked up the first shutout of her career.
Schnip put the Engineers on the board early, scoring what would prove to be the game-winner just 1:45 into the contest, on a feed from Nicholson. Nicholson added her first goal of the season just over four minutes later, converting on a pass from Jess Oleinik.
Teruya would provide Tech with some insurance early in the second half, scoring the game's final goal with 26:08 left on the clock. The MIT defense was impressive, holding Simmons to just seven shots for the game. By contrast, the Engineers fired off 17 shots in the contest.
Dixon needed to make just three saves to pick up the shutout. A pair of Simmons goalkeepers, Mary Simeoli and Jen Szkolt, combined for 10 stops.
The Engineers now head to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., where they will take part in the Betty Richey Tournament, hosted by Vassar College, over the weekend. MIT will take on the host school on Saturday, September 13 at 3:00 p.m., with the winner advancing to Sunday's championship game. Simmons travels to Mount Holyoke on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
