CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - A pair of first-half goals was all MIT needed as it registered a 2-0 victory over visiting Simmons College in non-conference field hockey action on Thursday night. Senior goalkeeper Alexa Herman made two saves in her ninth career shutout and second in three games.
The Sharks (1-3) put some early pressure on the Engineers' defense as they were awarded two penalty corners during the first three minutes of the contest. MIT (3-2) thwarted the scoring attempts and responded with offensive pressure of its own. On a penalty corner in the 13th minute, Jessica Oleinik directed the initial pass to Alex Wright who immediately found Lauren McCarthy for her first goal of the season.
The Engineers continued to attack throughout the period and eventually extended their lead with 5:18 remaining in the half. Following a penalty corner attempt, McCarthy corralled the ball and found Oleinik for an insurance goal.
Although MIT posted a 7-2 advantage in shots during the second stanza, strong defensive play by Simmons blocked three attempts while goaltender Cammy Keiler collected three of her five saves. The Sharks nearly ended the shutout with 1:09 on the clock, but Herman turned away the scoring opportunity.
Both teams will continue play on Tuesday, Sept. 18. MIT will travel to Nichols College while Simmons will host GNAC foe Lasell College.
