Field Hockey Takes WPI, 2-1, in the Battle of the Engineers
Oct. 3, 2007
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The MIT field hockey team picked up its first NEWMAC victory of the season following a 2-1 decision against WPI on Tuesday. The win lifted the Engineers' ledger to 4-7 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
MIT opened the scoring in the 16th minute on a penalty stroke by Ekavali Mishra. WPI applied offensive pressure of its own as it notched three shots, two of which were stopped by netminder Alexa Herman. Strong defensive play helped the Engineers maintain their slim lead through the intermission.
Cristina Stefanescu recorded an unassisted strike for what proved to be the game-winning goal after 7:05 expired in the second stanza. WPI cut its deficit in half five minutes later when Stacey Mohr notched an unassisted tally following a penalty corner. Both sides had several chances to add to their score throughout the remainder of the contest, but they couldn't capitalize on their opportunities.
For MIT, Herman finished the night with three saves as Mary Kate Toomey collected one save for WPI.
