CAMBRIDGE, MASS. - MIT evened its record at 4-4 with a 1-0 victory over UMass-Dartmouth on Thursday afternoon. The Engineers dominated on the offensive end, but struggled to get the ball in the cage. Their defense suffered a blow when Cheryl Texin received a yellow card for pushing with 3:51 remaining in the first half. As a result, Tech played down a player during the first 10 minutes of the second stanza.
The Corsairs (0-7) came out strong in the second half, receiving seven penalty corners. However, outstanding play by goalie Alexa Herman coupled with defensive saves from Megan Brown and Amanda Smith maintained the scoreless tie. MIT ended the deadlock with 15:26 left in the game when Amanda Hunter scored her first goal of the season on a penalty corner. Noelle Kanaga took the corner, directing her pass to Deanna Lentz who sent the ball to Hunter.
In the cage, Alexa Herman posted her first solo shutout in her career and finished with nine saves.
The next game for MIT will be Saturday, Oct. 2 when it hosts Clark University in NEWMAC play.
