Late Goal Propels Smith Over MIT In Double Overtime
Oct. 18, 2008
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Sarah Knowles pushed a rebound past MIT goalkeeper Keri Dixon just over three minutes into the second overtime to give Smith College a 2-1 victory over the Engineers in NEWMAC field hockey action Saturday. With the win the Pioneers pick up their first conference win and improve to 5-7 overall, while MIT drops to 5-9 on the year.
MIT controlled the ball for much of the first 35 minutes but was unable to find the back of the net. The Engineers outshot Smith, 12-5, in a scoreless first half. Freshman Phoebe Hopkins finally broke through 11 minutes into the second half for Smith, knifing through the defense for an unassisted goal. Anna Teruya would even up the score less than 10 minutes later, taking a pass from Ekavali Mishra and firing a shot from the top of the circle. Neither team would have much offensive success for the remainder of regulation and the first overtime, setting up Knowles’ game-winner. MIT outshot Smith 23-14 and had a 12-6 advantage in penalty corners.
Dixon made four saves in the losing effort. Smith goalkeeper Courtney Murphy had five saves.
The Engineers return to action on Tuesday, October 21 when they welcome conference foe Wheaton. Smith hosts WPI on Tuesday.
