Noelle Kanaga Leads MIT to Win Over WPI
Oct. 19, 2004
CAMBRIDGE, MASS. - A pair of assists from Noelle Kanaga helped MIT defeat WPI, 3-0, in NEWMAC field hockey action on Tuesday. Alexa Herman earned the shutout, marking the first time MIT posted consecutive shutouts since 1999.
MIT set the tone early, with Anna Ayuso scoring off a cross by Noelle Kanaga 1:47 into the game. MIT (9-5, 4-2 NEWMAC) continued to attack but WPI (3-12, 0-6 NEWMAC) goalie Lynn Reni came up with several incredible saves to keep her squad in the game. She finished the evening with a total of 12 stops.
After being held scoreless for nearly 40 minutes, MIT extended its lead 5:54 into the second stanza. During a fast break, Kanaga received the ball and put a shot on goal that ended up rolling under Reni's foot. Amanda Hunter then came in from the left, pushing the ball across the goal line. WPI responded with offensive pressure of its own, but MIT's defense thwarted any scoring attempts. MIT eventually put the game out of reach with 5:53 left to play when Deanna Lentz fired a shot from the top of the arc, connecting on a pass from Cheryl Texin off a penalty corner.
The next game for MIT will be on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 6:00 p.m. when it travels to Springfield College.
