SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Anne Doton had a pair of goals and added an assist for Mount Holyoke as the host Lyons defeated MIT, 4-1, in NEWMAC field hockey action on Saturday. With the loss, the Engineers fall to 5-12 on the season and 0-7 in conference play. The Lyons improve to 9-6 and 4-4 in the NEWMAC. Tech now needs a win in their season finale against Clark on Tuesday to qualify for the NEWMAC tournament.
Peggy Wefald opened the scoring for Mount Holyoke 14 minutes into the game when she redirected a shot by Mary Kate Switchenko past MIT goalkeeper Keri Dixon. Doton extended the lead in the 23rd minute on an unassisted goal. Just over four minutes later, Jess Fajardo received Doton's pass in front of the net and gave Mount Holyoke the 3-0 advantage.
Doton added her second goal eight minutes into the second half off of a penalty corner. Nirupama Yechoor put the Engineers on the board with just over 10 minutes to go, scoring off of a penalty corner on a pass from Ekavali Mishra. For the game, the Lyons held a 19-9 advantage in shots and had 10 penalty corners compared to six for Tech.
Dixon had eight saves in the losing effort. Mount Holyoke goalkeeper Allie Walsh made six saves to pick up the win.
MIT will host Clark on Tuesday, October 28, with the winner of that game advancing to the NEWMAC post-season tournament. Game time is at 6:00 p.m. Mount Holyoke has wrapped up their regular season and now await their first round match-up in the NEWMAC tournament, beginning next Saturday, November 1.
