CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Katie Kauffman scored her second goal of the season just over seven minutes into the game and MIT held off a furious rally in the final minute to preserve a 1-0 decision over Clark in NEWMAC field hockey action Tuesday night. With the win, the Engineers (6-12) have now clinched a berth in the NEWMAC post-season tournament and will play a quarterfinal round game on Saturday, November 1. The loss ends the season for the Cougars, whose record fell to 5-11 overall and 1-6 in conference play.

The game winning goal came after Danielle Smith’s original attempt was stopped by Clark goalkeeper Kathryn Dawsey. Kauffman was in perfect position for the rebound and pushed it home for the early lead. The Engineers controlled possession for most of the first half, outshooting the Cougars in the frame, 7-1.

Clark rallied in the second, holding a 10-6 shot advantage over the final 35 minutes. The Cougars best chance to tie the game came in the final minute. Freshman Meghan Lennon beat the defense downfield and had a chance to score the equalizer but MIT goalkeeper Keri Dixon came flying out of the net to kick the loose ball away. The ensuing scramble, however, resulted in a penalty corner for the visitors that was taken as time expired. Lennon’s final shot from the left side of the circle was stopped by Dixon and the referee’s whistle sealed the victory for the Cardinal and Gray.

Dixon stopped four shots to pick up her fourth shutout of the season. Dawsey had five saves in the losing effort.

The Engineers face top-seed Springfield College on Saturday in the NEWMAC quarterfinals. Game time is at 1:00 p.m.
