BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – A career-high five goal effort by sophomore Kaitlyn Nealon (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) would not be enough as Bridgewater State University went on to record a 12-6 win over the MIT women's lacrosse team on Thursday night. Senior Katie Kauffman (Olney, Md.) rounded out the scoring for the Engineers whose ledger dipped to 0-3 on the year.
The Bears got on the board after four minutes elapsed but Nealon registered the equalizer a minute later. Back-to-back goals by Bridgewater State put it ahead for good with 18:07 left in the half. Another unassisted marker from Nealon brought MIT within one (3-2); however, the hosts scored twice to gain some breathing room. Nealon completed the hat-trick at the 10:19 mark which was followed by a free-position goal by the Bears. Kauffman connected on a feed from freshman Emma Kane (Garden City, N.Y.), narrowing the gap to 6-4, but Bridgewater State converted two free-position attempts to close the half.
Bridgewater State notched two quick goals to start the second stanza, increasing its cushion to 10-4. Nealon countered with a free-position goal at 21:14 to keep MIT within striking distance. A defensive battle ensued as the game remained scoreless for 12 minutes until the Bears tacked on two more goals. Nealon found the back of the net with 4:20 left to play to wrap up the scoring.
Kauffman paced the Engineers with four draw controls while sophomore Rebecca MacRae (Sherborn, Mass.) contributed two groundballs and a caused turnover. In net, sophomore Sarah Ritter (The Woodlands, Texas) posted seven saves in 51 minutes as freshman Candice Kaplan (Arlington, Va.) finished out the game for the Cardinal and Gray.
MIT continues non-conference play on Saturday, March 17 at home against Eastern Connecticut State University.
