Box Score

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Senior co-captain Deanna Lentz scored five goals and added an assist in the first half as MIT (4-5, 2-2 NEWMAC) defeated Mount Holyoke College (5-8, 1-3 NEWMAC) 15-11 at Jack Barry Field on Saturday afternoon. The Engineers, who never trailed in the game, had four players with a pair of goals. Leading the way for the Lyons was senior Caitlin Taylor (four goals, one assist), freshman Marika Austin (three goals, one assist) and sophomore Anise Gold-Watts (three goals).

With the score tied at one just over ten minutes into the game, Lentz took matters into her own hands. She scored three goals in a span of 2:52 to give MIT a 4-1 lead. Sophomore Laura Watson added to that lead at 15:44, but the Lyons came right back. Taylor scored at 15:28 and Gold-Watts then strung together two straight goals to pull Mount Holyoke within one. However, MIT's co-captains Lentz and senior Elizabeth Lin each tallied two goals and an assist before the half was over, and the Engineers took a 10-6 advantage into the break.

After over 10 minutes of scoreless action to begin the second frame, Gold-Watts scored the much needed first goal for the Lyons at 19:14. Then at 17:46, Austin capitalized on a free position attempt to put Mount Holyoke in striking range at 10-8. But that was as close as the Lyons would get. After the teams traded goals, the Engineers went on a 3-0 run to take a commanding 14-9 lead with under eight minutes to play. Taylor and Austin would each score once more for the Lyons but it was too little too late.

Junior Hee Jay Kang was strong in net for the Engineers. She made 10 saves to improve her record to 4-5. Senior keeper Lauren Mulcahy turned aside eight shots for the Lyons.

The Engineers visit Wellesley College (6-8, 1-3 NEWMAC) on Tuesday, April 18 in the first of two road games to close out the regular season. The NEWMAC contest will begin at 4:30 p.m.
