Lussiez Scores Twice as Engineers Shutout Simmons

Cambridge, Mass. – Junior Alisha Lussiez scored two goals in the first half and goalkeeper Meghan Wright pitched a shutout in her first start of the season to help the MIT women's soccer team upend Simmons College 2-0 at Roberts Field. The Engineers improved to 2-0-0 on the young season, while the Sharks dropped their first contest of 2010.

Lussiez opened the scoring in the eleventh minute, taking a lead pass from Emily Kuo and getting in behind the Simmons defense before slotting the ball home for her first tally of the season.

The hosts struck again on the stroke of halftime, and again it was Lussiez getting in behind the Simmons backline. The junior from Livonia, Michigan took a pass over the top from substitute Michaelann Rodriguez and scored with another great finishing touch. Despite not controlling the game from the start, the strike right before halftime swung the momentum of the game in the favor of the Engineers, and they made sure to capitalize on it, dominating play for much of the second half.

Kuo picked up her first point of the season with the assist, as did the freshman Rodriguez who has looked strong in her first two games in the Cardinal and Grey. Sophomore Stephanie Cooke also picked up an assist on the second goal, as her header to Rodriguez keyed the Engineer breakout. Substitutes Anna Radinova and Allison Park gave good minutes late in the game and each registered a shot on goal.

A stout defense from MIT held the visitors to just two shots all afternoon, while their front line attacked the Simmons net. MIT fired nineteen shots, eleven of them at Simmons keeper Ashley Donaghey.

Donaghey played well for Simmons, making nine saves, but was constantly bombarded by offensive pressure from the Engineers.  Brooke MacKenzie fired three shots for Simmons, one of them on goal.

MIT will face its first road contest on Wednesday evening when it travels to Worcester State College. The Simmons Sharks will also be on the road Wednesday with a contest at Plymouth State.
