MIT Tops Simmons, 3-1, to Kick off 2011 Campaign
BOSTON, Mass. – A strong outing by junior goalie Meghan Wright (Devon, Pa.) along with a balanced attacked helped power the MIT women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Simmons College on Thursday night. The decision marked the Engineers' second straight season-opening win and fourth consecutive against the Sharks.
MIT took control early when sophomore Samantha Fleischmann (Eastchester, N.Y.) connected on a pass from fellow classmate Rachel Dias Carlson (Albany, N.Y.) after 7:49 elapsed. Simmons responded with tenacious play in the midfield, which eventually resulted in the equalizer in the 33rd minute as Keri Acheson redirected a cross from Desh Perera past Wright. The Engineers took the lead for good courtesy of a solo effort by sophomore Allison Park (Irvine, Calif.) with 1:28 remaining in the half.
The second stanza featured balanced play by both sides, with hard-earned offensive drives and noteworthy saves by both goalkeepers. However, MIT tacked on an insurance goal from junior Andrea Park (Irvine, Calif.) in the 80th minute. The tally marked the first time in their careers the Park sisters have scored in the same game.
In net, Wright finished with nine saves while Ashley Wheeler made three stops for Simmons.
"The main emphasis for the team this season is getting more players involved in scoring," said head coach Martin Desmarias. "We were very pleased to see three different players score, including two defenders. Simmons is a much improved team and we were happy to come away with the win following a tough road battle."
The Engineers continue their road trip on Saturday, Sept. 3 at Brandeis University with the game slated to start at 1:00 p.m.
