WALTHAM, Mass. – Although MIT made several charges at the net early in the game, it was host Brandeis University that came out on top with a 2-0 decision in a non-conference women's soccer game on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Engineers' ledger dipped to 1-1-0 on the year while the Judges improved 2-0-0.
Junior Emily Kuo (Chicago, Ill.) nearly put MIT on the board in the 11th minute but her blast hit the crossbar. Fellow classmate Cassandra Ceri (Clarksville, Tenn.) corralled the rebound and sent a shot that Brandeis goalie Francine Kofinas knocked over the net. The Engineers' next opportunity came four minutes later on another Ceri strike but Kofinas once again withstood the attack. The Judges countered courtesy of a free kick in the 20th minute. From 25 yards outside the box, Kelly Peterson's pass found the head of Mimi Theodore who sent the ball towards the open net which Mary Shimko tapped in.
After a balanced first half which featured six shots by both squads, Brandeis controlled the second stanza as it outshot MIT, 9-3. The consistent pressure resulted in an insurance goal with 18:50 remaining when Theodore headed a cross by Fran Shin.
In net, junior Meghan Wright (Devon, Pa.) made three saves for the Engineers while the Judges' Michelle Savuto had three stops in the second half.
The Engineers will take on Worcester State University in their first home game of the season on Tuesday, Sept. 6 at 7:00 p.m.
