CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Freshman Ambika Krishnamachar's (Darien, Conn.) unassisted goal in the 40th minute proved to be all the MIT women's soccer team needed as it defeated Lesley University, 1-0, on Tuesday night. The Engineers raised their ledger to 4-1-0 following their third consecutive win and second straight shutout.
The Lynx threatened to open the scoring early in the first half when Veronica Halen drove to the right side of the goal but her shot passed over the cross bar.
With just over five minutes remaining before the intermission, Krishnamachar capitalized on a one-on-one breakaway and unleashed a strike from 10 yards out that was initially stopped by goalie Emileigh Lloyd. However, the backspin brought it over the goal line and resulted in the rookie's first intercollegiate marker.
Lesley nearly registered the equalizer in the 60th minute. Halen sent a blast from 25 yards away but it hit the top right corner of the goal and bounced out of play.
The contest was a balanced affair as MIT held a 12-11 edge in shots while both teams were awarded a pair of corner kicks. Junior goalie Meghan Wright (Devon, Pa.) collected six saves for the Engineers while Lloyd turned away three shots for the Lynx.
MIT will host Clark University on Saturday, Sept. 17 in the NEWMAC opener for both teams.
