Three-Goal First Half Carries MIT Past Husson, 5-1
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT scored its first goal in the third minute and then scored twice more before the half as the Engineers went on to score a 5-1 win over Husson University in non-conference women's soccer action at Steinbrenner Stadium. Junior Emily Kuo (Chicago, Ill.) scored the first two goals of the game and added an assist to lead MIT to the win. The Engineers improved to 11-3-2 with their fourth straight victory while Husson fell to 7-11-0.
MIT dominated the play early and struck quickly when junior Merricka Livingstone (Palm Bay, Fla.) steered the ball from the right side in to Kuo whose shot found the back corner of the net for the early 1-0 lead. The Engineers did not let up on the gas and continued to control the play and keep pressure on the Eagles defense.
That pressure paid off in the 15th minute when freshman Ambika Krishnamachar (Darien, Conn.) slipped a pass through the defense that found Kuo, who finished the play with a shot to the back of the net for her second score of the night and fourth of the season. Husson still had not recorded a shot when Kuo saw freshman Jessica Ong (Oklahoma City, Okla.) breaking free down the middle of the field in the 32nd minute. She played a ball ahead that Ong took and then broke towards the goal. She split a pair of defenders and buried her shot for her first career goal.
MIT struck quickly again in the second half to push its advantage to four goals. Three minutes into the half sophomore Rachel Dias Carlson (Albany, N.Y.) got a ball to Krishnamachar who was able to get a shot off that found the back of the goal for her team leading fifth score of the season.
Husson, which had been outshot 9-1 in the first half, was finally able to mount a couple of threats midway through the second half. The Eagles avoided the shutout in the 68th minute when Alexandra Laniewski was able to work free from the MIT defense along the left side. She slipped a pass into the box that was redirected in by Katie DeShane for her fifth score of the season, putting the Eagles on the board.
MIT put the finishing touches on the win in the 81st minute. Playing a corner, Kuo put the ball in the middle where it was finally corralled by Ong. She was able to find sophomore Michaelann Rodriguez (Florence, Ala.) who got it past the Husson keeper for her first goal of the season.
MIT will close out the regular season on Saturday as it returns to NEWMAC play with a home game against Babson College at 1:00 p.m.
