Engineers Defeat Wheaton in NEWMAC Tournament Overtime Thriller

Junior Leslie Meyer

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – With 1:09 remaining in the second overtime period, junior Leslie Meyer's (Brownsburg, Ind.) first goal of the season was a timely one as it propelled MIT to a 2-1 victory over Wheaton College in the semifinals of the NEWMAC Women's Soccer Championship Tournament on Saturday afternoon. The No. 3 seeded Engineers improved to 14-3-2 and will face host and No. 1 seed Springfield College in the title game at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.

MIT got on the board just four minutes into the contest. Junior Merricka Livingstone's (Palm Bay, Fla.) shot from the right side was touched by Wheaton goalie Lindsay Leddy, but it bounced into the net for her first marker of the year. The Lyons registered the equalizer in the 81st minute when Emily Vincunas hit a cross that led Gabriella Verde perfectly into a header.

In the first overtime period, Wheaton had a chance to steal the victory. Vincunas hit a nice cross that curved towards the net but deflected off of the cross bar.

After a scoreless first overtime session, MIT regained momentum in the second overtime. The Engineers used a free kick to set up the eventual game-winner. Junior Emily Kuo (Chicago, Ill.) found Meyer in the center of the box where she ripped a shot past Leddy for the win.

In net, junior Meghan Wright (Devon, Pa.) collected 10 saves.

The victory sets up a rematch of the NEWMAC Final in 2009 when the same two teams competed. On that occasion, MIT came out the winner and made its first trip to the NCAA Tournament.
