Tech Prepares for Showdown with Skidmore on Saturday
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Following a thrilling shootout victory in the NEWMAC women's soccer championship on Sunday, MIT will face Skidmore College in the first round of the NCAA Tournament hosted at Messiah College on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 1:30 p.m. Should the Engineers advance, they will face either Messiah or Elms College at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday. The Cardinal and Gray is making the program's second appearance in three years following their second league title.
MIT's journey through the NEWMAC tournament was filled with drama from the opening whistle. In quarterfinal action with Wellesley College last Tuesday, junior Emily Kuo (Chicago, Ill.) provided the lone goal in the 23rd minute while junior goalkeeper Meghan Wright (Devon, Pa.) made several key second half saves to keep the Blue off the board. On Saturday, junior Leslie Meyer (Brownsburg, Ind.) found the back of the net with 1:09 remaining in double overtime to propel MIT past Wheaton College in the semifinals. The next day against Springfield College, sophomore Samantha Fleischmann (Eastchester, N.Y.) scored the tying goal in the 83rd minute as classmate Rachel Dias Carlson (Albany, N.Y.) netted the game-winner in the shootout.
Skidmore (13-6-0) received an at-large bid to the 64-team tournament after falling to No. 2 William Smith College, 3-0, in the Liberty League title game on Saturday. The Thoroughbreds earned the program's fifth berth overall and the third in the last four years.
