MIT Women's Soccer Edges Out Worcester State, 3-2

WORCESTER, Mass. - After a very close, back and forth game, the MIT women's soccer team were able to edge out Worcester State, 3-2. Freshman Nikki Effenberger (Escondido, Calif.) scored the game-winning goal with just nine minutes remaining in the second half.

Nine minutes into the game, Laura Maunsell scored the first goal for the Lancers, giving Worcester State a quick lead. In the next four minutes, four attempts were made at the opposing goal. Two of them were saved by goalkeeper, Danielle Grunbaum, while one shot by freshman Jennifer Ibanez (West Windsor, N.J.) narrowly missed the goal and hit the post instead. In the 20th minute, however, senior Emily Kuo (Chicago, Ill.) blew by a defender and sank the ball in the net to tie up the game.

Less than two minutes later, Brianne Beckman shot the ball from right outside the box into the upper right corner of the net, going over the head of senior goalkeeper Meghan Wright (Devon, Pa.), giving the Lancers the lead once again. With ten minutes left in the first half, junior Samantha Fleischmann (Eastchester, N.Y.) shot the ball from 25 yards away, sending it flying past the goalie and into the left side of the net, marking her first goal for the season.

The score remained at 2-1 for most of the second half, even though there was a lot of action between the nets. In a ten minute window, junior Michaelann Rodriguez (Florence, Ala.) took four shots at the goal, two of them being saved by Grunbaum. In the 80th minute of play, Effenberger, who was assisted by fellow freshman Morgan Moroi (New Albany, Ohio), shot the ball past Grunbaum to put MIT ahead, 3-2.

In the last ten minutes of the game, the Engineers worked hard to keep the lead. With 20 seconds left in the game, Beckman made one last unsuccessful attempt at Wright in the goal, leaving the score at 3-2 in MIT's favor.

The Cardinal and Gray will be back on the field when they travel to Manhattanville College to face Eastern Connecticut State in the Valiant Classic on Friday, Sept. 7, while the Lancers will be hitting the road for Clark on Saturday, Sept. 8.
