Soccer Shares Regular Season Title with Springfield After Defeating Smith, 1-0
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - MIT women's soccer closed its regular season with a win against Smith on Saturday afternoon when sophomore Ashley Peter (Manhasset, N.Y.) scored the lone goal of the game in the second half. The Engineers, who are tied with Springfield with a conference record of 8-1, shared the regular season title, marking the first time that the team has done so.
In the first half, even though the score remained at 0-0 for the entire 45 minutes, MIT made valiant effort at making a goal. Senior Leslie Meyer (Brownsburg, Ind.) took two shots within a few minutes of each other, both of which needed to be saved by keeper Cody Norris. Later on in the period, a shot by freshman Jennifer Ibanez (West Windsor, N.J.) also had to be saved. The Engineers outshot the Pioneers, 7-0, leaving senior goalie Meghan Wright (Devon, Pa.) with little action for the first part of the game.
The second period went much like the previous half: in the first 20 minutes of the half, the Cardinal and Gray outshot Smith, 9-1, five of which were saved by Norris. In the 75th minute, Peter shot a ball at the net that Norris was not able to save, scoring the game-winning goal and giving MIT a lead of 1-0. In the last 15 minutes of the game, the Engineers took four shots, two of them by junior Samantha Fleischmann (Eastchester, N.Y.) and sophomore Ambika Krishnamachar (Darien, Conn.) being saved by Norris. The game ended with an MIT victory, 1-0.
MIT, who will receive a bye into the semifinals of the NEWMAC championship, will next play either Wheaton or Wellesley on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 1:30 p.m. at Springfield.
