BOSTON, Mass. – The MIT women's soccer team was picked third in the first-ever New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) preseason poll, as voted on by the coaches in the league, it was announced on Wednesday.
MIT, with its two first-place votes, sits behind Springfield College and Wheaton College, who tied for first place. The Pride received six first-place votes, while the Lyons earned three.
Last season, the Engineers received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament after being eliminated from the NEWMAC semifinals when Wheaton advanced in penalty kicks. In the first round of the tournament, MIT advanced over Haverford College in penalty kicks, 4-2, marking the first time the team had made it past the first round. The next day, MIT defeated The College of New Jersey in double overtime, 1-0, making history for the second time in two days with the program's first tournament victory.
In its first ever Sweet Sixteen appearance, Tech fell to eventual national champion Messiah College, ending its season with a record of 14-4-3.
